ABOUT THE GUILD
The Transvaal Fly Tyers Guild
The Guild was formed in 1991 by a group of fly fishermen who wanted to further their own knowledge and pass on to others information on the art of fly dressing.
The Guild meets once a month from January to November on the second Monday of each month (no meeting in December).
The venue is the TSC Fishing Club in Morningside. Find us on the provided map below.
Time 7:00pm for 7:30pm and normally finishes at around 9:30pm.
The evening’s program is as follows: Introduction by Chairperson with news items followed by a guest tyer who demonstrates the evening’s fly including how to fish the fly. The fly is generally seasonal, i.e. Yellowfish, Trout, Barbel, Bass, Saltwater etc.
After the demonstration of the tying technique the materials for the fly, including hooks, are put out on a table and made available to the members to sit down and tie the fly. This gives the member the opportunity to practice the technique in tying the fly and to ask for help with any problems he has in tying the fly. Your fly is then entered into a competition to pick the evening’s winner who goes forward to our year end competition for the best dressed flies for the year. You can then ask the demonstrator the points on which your fly let you down if you did not win.
All you have to bring along for the evening is your vice, flytying tools and thread. The required hooks and material are provided by our generious sponsors.
Guild members also arrange ad hoc fly fishing outings and clinics, with the aim of improving the skills of members and if they would like to fish competitively, to try out for the Northern Gauteng Fly Fishing team.
Individuals in the Guild have gone forward to represent the Province as well as the Proteas in International Fly Fishing Competitions.
